Best CPAP

From LoveToKnow Sleep

The best CPAP machine, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, is one that allows you a good night's sleep. A variety of products are on the market, with much improvement over older CPAP machines and masks.

How the CPAP Machine Works

CPAP masks are fitted over the face or nose and connected to the CPAP machine with a hose. The CPAP mask provides a constant flow of air from the CPAP machine through the nasal passages into the lungs. The pressure of the air produced by the CPAP machine keeps the airway open in the back of the throat, allowing patients suffering from sleep apnea to sleep well.

Comparing for the Best CPAP Machine

A range of CPAP machines are on the market, manufactured by various companies. You can start your shopping by comparing them online at a website like cpap.com to determine how well each machine might fit your particular situation. Here is a chart with a few different types of machines to show you which features to compare to find the best CPAP machine for your needs.

CPAP Machine Comparison
CPAP Machine Manufacturer Cost Pressure Range Data Card
ZZZ-PAP Silent Traveler Probasics$209 4-18 Cm No
Everest 2 AEIOmed $200 4-20 Cm Optional
M Series Remstar Plus Respironics $579 4-20 Cm Yes
M Series Pro Respironics $669 4-20 Cm Optional

Benefits from Respironics

In the Respironics CPAP devices, the higher price tag reflects several additions not available through other devices. This includes the EncoreViewer which is an optional add on software that gives details of the performance of the machine. Your doctor or therapist can download this information from the machine and use it to determine how long you used the machine and what the machine and the prescribed pressure did for you. This is an excellent benefit since it gives doctors an insight into the progression of your sleep apnea or other breathing events, making this one of the best CPAP machine features.

Another benefit of the Respironics machines is their ability to provide a pressure relief technology pioneered by C-Flex. This device allows for easier breathing back out against the air pressure produced by the CPAP machine, a problem some CPAP users have. Breathing out against the pressure of the CPAP machine can be difficult, but this technology makes it possible.

Features to Look for in CPAP Machines

Considering a wide range of the best CPAP machines is beneficial, especially when you have an option. Before making a purchase, check with your insurance provider or Medicare to determine which machines are covered under their policies. You may be given a dollar amount or only specific devices to select from. Buying another may be an out-of-pocket cost.

CPAP Machines

You do want to look at the specific features available on a CPAP machine including:

  • Battery or Plug In: Some devices allow for both options, some require a battery to be purchased separately from the device. Most come with a domestic battery with voltage of 110 or 220, not integrated. International batteries are available, too.
  • Ramping: Ramping allows for the CPAP machine to start delivering air at a lower pressure and then gradually increase the pressure as you fall asleep. This should give you a range from 0 to 45 minutes and is a definite consideration for those having trouble adjusting to the air pressure while falling asleep.
  • Humidity: Often sold as an optional add on, humidifiers are a good way to soothe your nasal passages adding to the comfort level. Heated and passover humidifiers are available.
  • Alerts: Mask off alerts are an option for some devices. These can be helpful especially in people who toss and turn, or those having trouble fitting the device.
  • Warranty: The average warranty of the best CPAP machines are two years. This may not include the CPAP mask, though. Longer warranties are always beneficial when available.

Weighing your options in CPAP machines is important. If you are unsure of your need for a product or device, talk with your doctor. They can recommend CPAP machines they prefer you to use, often based on their effectiveness in past patients with your conditions.

Most devices will last beyond two years, often five years or more. Most are durable enough to withstand bumps and falls, but they should be positioned in a safe position regularly. Most are lightweight, fewer than five pounds, and allow you to take them with you when you travel or move from room to room.

You don't have to purchase the CPAP machine from the source recommended by your doctor. Find out which CPAP machine your doctor is recommending and get a prescription which shows the pressure level required. Then you can compare pricing of CPAP machines and purchase anywhere. The pricing listed here is an average, but discounts, insurance payments and comparison shopping both in medical supply retailers and online can help you lower that price. Prices will adjust over time, too.

Comments

Hi HK, The pressure is prescribed by a physician and the manufacturer probably has a "clinician's setup" that is hidden. The best approach is to talk to your physician if you think the prescribed pressure is wrong.

See CPAP Supply for information about changing the settings. It is extremely important to discuss this with your doctor because the setting is a prescription and should be followed as directed.
