Effects of Lack of Sleep

From LoveToKnow Sleep

The effects of lack of sleep include a surly demeanor, diminished cognitive function and impairment of reflexes. Being forced to stay awake or a persistent inability to sleep can leave a person as impaired as imbibing too much alcohol.

About the Effects of Lack of Sleep

Everyone experiences the occasional sleepless night and is grumpy the next day, but any parent can tell you that when kids miss their naps and aren’t getting enough sleep, they’re a real bear to deal with. Adults are only nominally better when deprived of sleep on a regular basis.

Sleep deprivation slows reaction time, impairs your ability operate heavy equipment and can affect the immune system, concentration and mood. Most parents with a newborn at home undergo severe sleep deprivation because the baby gets them up at all hours. Napping can help offset this lack of sleep, but it doesn’t replace a regular sleep schedule.

The Sleepless Grouch

One of the more profound effects of lack of sleep is what happens to a person’s temper and mood. While researchers continue to try to understand why people need to sleep, lack of sleep makes people irritable, easy to annoy and short tempered. Lack of sleep can lead to poor job performance and poor personal performance.

Parents running on low sleep will be more likely to snap at their children; married couples running on little to no sleep are more likely to disagree, and lack of sleep can contribute to road rage. Ultimately, lack of sleep has an impact on personal happiness and success. No one wants to spend time with a grouch and the grouch in question is basing their opinions on their short-tempered observations, not a positive combination.

Absenteeism

Inconsistent sleep patterns and sleep deprivation can lead to absenteeism at work and at school and reduce performance at both. Sluggishness in the morning due to lack of sleep can also affect academic performance and perceptions. No one wants to yawn their way through a meeting and teachers frown mightily on students falling asleep in class.

Sleepless and Sicker

The human body requires two distinct types of fuel: food and sleep. Without regular sleep and good eating habits, the body’s natural defenses begin to break down and this leads to a higher incidence rate of colds and flu which can contribute to absenteeism, lack of sleep and grouchiness. Science Daily published a report on the fact that the more a person is stressed, the sicker they become. Sleeplessness is often related to stress, whether it is caused by stress or the sleeplessness creates a stressful situation.

The effects of lack of sleep diminishes the quality of life for both the person not sleeping and the family around them. If you or someone you love suspect that you have a sleep problem, contact a physician for a diagnosis and treatment so that you can start sleeping again.
