Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine
From LoveToKnow Sleep
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) publishes the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (JCSM), a peer-reviewed medical journal. This twice-monthly publication aims at doctors and nurses specializing in sleep medicine, as well as sleep technicians and managers of sleep centers.
JCSM's Parent Organization: The American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Sleep researchers and scientists established the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, originally named the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers, in 1975 to provide standards for sleep center accreditation. The AASM continues to set standards for sleep education, research, and practice, and has approximately 7,000 members. AASM members are doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who specialize in caring for patients with sleep disorders, although only physician members have voting rights within the organization. The AASM publishes JCSM and works with the Sleep Research Society to publish SLEEP, an exclusively sleep and sleep disorder-focused publication.
SleepEducation.com
The AASM also operates a public education website about sleep and sleep disorders. SleepEducation.com translates the latest AASM findings into plain language, and discusses healthy sleep habits, sleep disorders, and sleep medicine for the public.
Accessing JCSM Articles
The easiest way to guarantee access to all of the articles in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine is to buy a subscription. JCSM subscriptions are very reasonably priced at $50 for an individual and $105 for institutions. These prices include both the physical issues that JCSM publishes monthly as well as online access to PDF versions of all articles.
Abstracts and PubMed
JCSM does release brief summaries of each article, called “abstracts,” on the website, but these include only brief information about study objectives, methods, and results. Those looking for a quick and easy read may find that they don't need more than the featured abstracts to stay on top of the latest sleep research, but some may want the full article without the subscription fees. To get access to the full text of articles over six months old, go to the National Institute of Health's PubMed site and look up the title of interest.
Podcast
If reading isn't your style, the monthly JCSM podcast features reviews of certain articles published that month, and is another great way to get a brief summary of some of the newest findings in sleep medicine. These podcasts are available for download on the JCSM homepage.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credit
JCSM offers one CME credit for licensed physicians in Canada, the US, and Mexico who read and submit an evaluation form for four designated CME papers within an issue. CME credit from JSCM is free for members; non-members pay a $20 administrative fee. CME evaluation forms are available on the JCSM website.
Submitting to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine
JCSM accepts unsolicited manuscripts; however, they charge a $50 per page fee to help with the publishing costs. Securing an invitation before submitting a manuscript seems to be a wiser and cheaper option. Standards are high for submitted manuscripts, and all authors are required to sign over the copyrights before publication. In addition, all rights to the work belong permanently to JCSM. While this may seem harsh, it seems to be a standard requirement in the world of academic publishing.
Potential authors must submit a statement of disclosure with their work that details any conflicts of interest or profit they received as a part of their research, as well as a statement that their work is completely original. The JCSM website lists manuscript format requirements, styles for citation of sources, and general information for authors as they prepare to submit their work.
Authors submit manuscripts to JCSM via an electronic file transfer system. Files are uploaded, converted to PDF files, and then assigned to peer reviewers to accept, edit, or reject. The entire editorial process is via the electronic system, although authors do receive physical proofs of the article before publication. Authors can request ten complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears, but there is no outright payment for published articles to preserve the academic nature of the publication.
Using the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine
The JCSM is an excellent resource for anyone interested in sleep or sleep disorders. It publishes studies and case reviews that haven't been published anywhere else, making it a great source of new information about the progress of sleep medicine. Its articles are the basis for news articles, term papers, and books about sleep; and its research shapes and changes the practice of sleep medicine today.
