List of Sleep Disorders
From LoveToKnow Sleep
Sometimes, a list of sleep disorders can help you to pinpoint a problem you are having. A sleep disorder can be anything that causes you to have trouble sleeping. They can be both physically and mentally triggered events. Some are caused by imbalances in the body while others are caused by outside factors.
List of Sleep Disorders Commonly Found
If you can't sleep, it is important to note how often you are affected. Also, note the types of things you are doing before you are going to sleep for the night. The following are some of the most common sleep disorders individuals experience.
- Insomnia: Those dealing with insomnia are unable to fall asleep or stay asleep. These individuals have the opportunity and time to sleep, but cannot do so. Insomnia may be caused by poor quality or quantity of sleep and occurs in 30 to 50 percent of the population.
- Hypersomnia: Hypersomnia is a condition in which a person has trouble staying awake during the day. Individuals with hypersomnia fall asleep at any time, even while driving or working. Most have other types of sleep related problems. It may be caused by other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, drugs, alcohol, head injury, being overweight or sleep deprivation.
- Narcolepsy: Unlike hypersomnia, narcolepsy is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Excessive daytime sleepiness is the main indication of this condition. Individuals may also have a loss of muscle tone, distorted perceptions and the inability to move or talk. Narcolepsy is thought to be caused by abnormalities in the structure and the function of nerve cells in the brain.
- Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a reduction or cessation of breathing occurs during sleep. Snoring is a key symptom of this condition. Individuals who suffer from sleep apnea will stop breathing for a few seconds at a time, many times per night. In some cases, only 25 percent of the normal breathes are taken in. It may be caused by narrow airways. Those with larger tongues or larger neck areas are prone to suffer from sleep apnea.
- Restless Leg Syndrome: Restless leg syndrome is a neurological sleep disorder. Individuals with RLS will experience restless legs that feel uncomfortable, burning or creeping. Individuals experience the condition so much, so that it limits their ability to sleep. Restless leg syndrome may be caused by anemia, pregnancy, some types of medications, alcohol, nicotine, or kidney disease.
Other Sleep Disorders and Conditions
There are many other types of sleep disorders. This list of sleep disorders includes some less serious but still common sleep disorders.
- Bedwetting: Bedwetting is common in young children and is often caused by the inability to recognize the need to use the restroom while sleeping. It can also be linked to emotional trauma, especially in older children and adults.
- Jet Lag: Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder in which individuals suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia or fatigue as a result of air travel across time zones. Jet lag occurs when the traveler's body has not responded to the different time zone and as a result, they are unable to sleep properly.
- Sleepwalking: Individuals who walk or perform other activities while still being a sleep are suffering from sleepwalking. Sleepwalking can be caused by reactions to medications or alcohol, or some forms of mental illness. REM, or Rapid Eye Movement, disorders may also lead to sleep walking.
- Teeth Grinding: Some individuals will grind their teeth while they are sleeping. The condition, known as bruxism medically, is not usually harmful, but if it continues on a regular basis, it can wear down the teeth. It may be caused by anxiety or stress.
Individuals who are suffering from any of these or other sleep disorders should speak to their doctor about the condition. Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to complications in health and overall wellbeing. Many of these conditions and disorders are treatable through doctor help and guidance.
