New Jersey Sleep Apnea
From LoveToKnow Sleep
New Jersey sleep apnea patients have several options for professional sleep disorder diagnosis and various types of treatment. The treatment options include both major health centers as well as specialty dentists, all with staffs of fully-trained, experienced professionals.
New Jersey Sleep Apnea Specialists
New Jersey has many sleep disorder professionals and sleep centers, several of which are connected to major health centers. If you think you might have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, you should ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep specialist. The specialist, usually a board-certified internist with specialized training in sleep disorders, can provide the additional diagnosis and evaluation needed. Most sleep disorder professionals are connected with a center that also has a sleep test facility.
Center for Sleep Medicine at Capital Health
The Center for Sleep Medicine at Capital Health is the largest sleep center in Mercer and Bucks counties and has been providing sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment for over twenty years. The Center is staffed with board-certified experts who specialize in the diagnosis, sleep evaluation and individualized treatment of sleep disorders.
The Snoring & Sleep Apnea Center of Mercer County is located on the Fuld Campus of Capital Health and is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. When combined with the facilities in Bucks County, the Center has fourteen private rooms for sleep testing such as:
- Nighttime sleep testing – Patients are provided all diagnosed sleep studies such as a polysomnogram (PSG) which monitors the patient's sleep patterns, breathing, heart activity and oxygen levels. The patient can leave early in the morning and go on to complete their regular daytime activities.
- Daytime sleep testing – Some patients require a daytime nap test, called a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). This test assesses daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy. This daytime test could be required on the day following the patient's nighttime sleep test.
- Pediatric sleep testing – Children over the age of one can be tested overnight in a special environment established for child testing. Arrangements are also available for parents and guardians who want to stay with their child during the sleep test.

Part of the diagnosis could include sleep testing in one of the Center's four sleep study rooms. The rooms have equipment to monitor and record sleeping activities of a patient. All rooms are monitored by skilled technicians who can provide the patient's sleep physician with the information they need to make a sleep disorder diagnosis and to recommend a treatment program.
Cooper patients are provided with both traditional sleep apnea treatments such as CPAP machines and CPAP masks. Customized oral mouthpieces, surgical procedures, medications and lifestyle changes may also be recommended by the physician based on the particular needs of the patient.

Advanced Center for Advanced Dentistry
The Atlantic for Advanced Dentistry provides many types of dental treatments for snoring and sleep apnea including oral appliances through its Sleep Breathing Disorders Center. The Center's founder is Dr. John K Bixby who is a Fellow of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the world-renowned dental training center.
Dr. Bixby is a sleep apnea patient who uses a CPAP machine; however he understands that some patients are not able or willing to use the CPAP treatment, the generally-accepted form of treatment. He evaluates the patient's habits and makes recommendations to help patients treat their sleep apnea. For example, he might recommend avoiding alcohol or sleeping in a new position. He may also recommend a custom-fitted oral appliance to successfully treat their sleep apnea. The appliances are worn in the mouth during sleep to reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. The appliances are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
