In Newport News, sleep apnea sufferers can find qualified medical help in a few different places. For those who suspect they may have sleep apnea, the first step is a visit to the primary care doctor. This visit is necessary because most sleep disorder specialists only accept referrals from other physicians, rather than from patients themselves. Many primary doctors are very willing to give a patient a referral to a specific practice or physician if he or she requests one, so this first step should not be hard.

Peninsula Pulmonary Associates is part of the Riverside Health Systems in eastern Virginia. The practice boasts three certified nurse practitioners and has six physicians:

This practice accepts referrals from other physicians, but patients cannot refer themselves to the practice. PPA does include a sleep consult form for physicians to download and fax to their office. PPA requests that relevant medical records be sent, as well as a copy of any insurance cards, and the results of any prior sleep studies.

The practice does provide names and phone numbers for local primary care doctors who are accepting new patients, in case a potential patients does not have a doctor of his or her own. The PPA site does note that usually patients are evaluated and placed on a treatment or medication regimen, and then returned to their primary care physicians for further follow-up. PPA is a Medicare provider and accepts insurance from most major commercial providers. They offer insurance billing services, but note that it is the patient’s responsibility to work with their insurance company to obtain any prior authorization for services or referral forms.

The Riverside Sleep Disorders Center works with adults and children over the age of twelve who have sleep problems and disorders like obstructive sleep apnea. The clinic’s medical director is Dr. Eric A. Weiner, DABSM, and three other physicians practice at the center: C. Delp Givens, MD, DABSM, Helene Goldsman, MD, and Anthony Panettiere, Jr., MD, DABSM.

The Center accepts Medicare and Medicaid, as well as most major insurances. The Center does not currently have a website, so patients and potential patients can call (757) 594-2012 to ask questions about referrals, appointments, and available services. Sleep studies are not done at a first appointment, but patients are encouraged to bring their completed patient paperwork and someone who has witnessed them sleep or who shares their bed.

For very young obstructive sleep apnea sufferers, Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) offers pulmonary specialists for infants, young children, and adolescents. The group is based at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Norfolk, Virginia, but the group also has an office in Newport News. The CSG pulmonologists are Dr. Jose Chocano, Dr. Cynthia Epstein, and Dr. Marilyn Gowen.

Patients can call the Norfolk office for initial appointments and with questions at (757) 668-7426; office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. CSG maintains a list of accepted insurances on their website, and does mention the possibility of payment arrangements for families who have difficulty paying. CSG does accept Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare.

Finding the right doctor is the first step on the way to keeping sleep apnea under control, and a specialist in apnea will be able to construct the best personalized treatment plan for each patient.
