Norfolk Snoring Treatment

From LoveToKnow Sleep

For those who live in Norfolk, snoring treatment is readily available. While everyone snores at some point in his or her life, chronic snoring can disrupt the sleep of both the snorer and his or her bed partner. Snoring is also a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder which can be life threatening if left untreated.

The best place to start looking for treatment of chronic snoring is a primary care doctor, but he may refer the snorer to a sleep specialist for further evaluation and treatment. In Norfolk, chronic snorers have a couple of choices in the local area for treatment of their snoring.

Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Sleep Disorders Center

The EVMS Sleep Disorders Center, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, has been seeing patients with sleep problems since 1980. Since the center is part of a medical school, the focus is not only on patient diagnosis and treatment, but also on researching new treatments and diagnostic tests for sleep disorders.

The head of the Center is Dr. Catesby Ware, PhD, a board certified physician and in Sleep Medicine. He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1977, and received his PhD from Tufts University. Dr. Ware is affiliated with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Sleep Research Society, and the Society of Psychophysiological Research.

Dr. Robert D. Vorona is an associate professor in the Division of Sleep Medicine, and is board certified in Sleep Disorders, Pulmonary Medicine, and Internal Medicine. Dr. Vorona received his MD in 1981 from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He served his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and completed a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Another associate professor of Sleep Medicine is Dr. Nancy F. Fishback, who is also the department chair of the Anatomy and Pathology departments at EVMS. Dr. Fishback received her MD in 1970 from Indiana University, and completed residencies in Internal Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans, and in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Fishback is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pathology, and Internal Medicine, and is accepting new patients.

The Center also includes two nurse practitioners. The first is Patricia W. Benson, who reserved her Master of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in 1995, and is affiliated with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the Tidewater Council of Nurse Practitioners. Maria P. Winn, the other nurse practitioner at the Center, received her Master of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in 1998, and is affiliated with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Both nurse practitioners are accepting new patients.

The Sleep Disorders Center is located on the second floor of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and can be reached by phone at 757-388-3322.

Jack Cherin, DMD

Jack Cherin, a doctor of dental medicine, offers a non-surgical Norfolk snoring treatment option for chronic snorers. Dental appliances for snoring work to bring the tongue and lower jaw forward, as well as supporting the tissues of the soft palate that may be sagging into the throat. Dr. Cherin’s website does note that persons seeking a dental appliance to treat snoring should also be under a physician’s care to rule out the possibility of sleep apnea. As long as the appliance is fitted properly to the patient, snoring should disappear.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia published a study in the April 1997 edition of the peer-reviewed journal ‘’Thorax’’ that concluded that dental appliances were a solid option for the first treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea, even before CPAP is tried. If a dental appliance is effective in treating sleep apnea, it should be more than adequate for a snoring problem. Dr. Cherin’s office phone number is 757-497-8611, and his website has more information on dental appliances for the treatment of snoring.

Norfolk Snoring Treatment

Chronic snorers from Norfolk should start with their primary care doctor, and then seek a referral to either an accredited sleep center or a dentist with experience in dental appliances. It’s important that those who have a serious snoring problem be evaluated for possible sleep apnea, as snoring is a major symptom of this sometimes dangerous condition.
