Treating Sleep Apnea Symptoms Houston

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and the largest in the state of Texas. As of 2007, the population hovered around 2.2 million in a 600 mile square area. Studies suggest that 4% of men and 2% of women suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea may affect between 150,000 and 200,000 citizens of Houston. Diagnosing sleep apnea requires those who are affected with it to seek a consultation with their physician.

Sleep apnea is most often noticed by a patient's spouse or partner. Symptoms of the sleep disorder include gasping for air, stopping breathing for as much as 10 seconds during sleep, waking up with painful headaches (caused by oxygen deprivation), severe daytime fatigue, general malaise, depression and depressed immune system.

A large percentage of people who suffer from sleep apnea are also overweight. The weight gain can contribute to the sleep disorder, but the sleep disorder also contributes to the inability to lose the excess weight.

Seeking Help

Houston citizens who suspect they have sleep apnea should make an appointment with their primary physician. The doctor typically asks a series of questions related to the apnea condition. If the physician feels you meet the criteria, he or she can then recommend you to a sleep center for a sleep study. A sleep study is important because while you might 'think' you have sleep apnea, sleep apnea has definite physiological symptoms that can be observed during a sleep study.

Following the sleep study, the specialist will study your results and then provide you with a diagnosis and a recommendation. If you have sleep apnea, you'll need to go back for a CPAP titration test. You may have to repeat that visit more than once to find the right equipment and settings. CPAP may take more than a little time to get used to, but in the long run, it provides sleep apnea sufferers with a good night's sleep.

What Doctor is Right for You?

It's not unusual for patients visiting a sleep center for a sleep study to not meet their sleep doctors. The attendants and medical assistants will hook you up, observe your sleeping patterns, record your data and put together a report for the doctor to review in the morning. In some cases, you will go in and speak to the doctor during daylight hours, but most visits to sleep centers happen after normal business hours.
