Snoring Cure

From LoveToKnow Sleep

Finding a snoring cure becomes very important especially when you and your loved ones are not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately, there is not a single cure that works for all people. Rather, you need to determine what is causing the snoring and then find an adequate solution.

Find the Cause Before the Snoring Cure

The first step in finding a snoring cure is to determine what is causing the snoring. This way, a treatment plan can be in play that tackles the underlying cause of the snoring and resolves the problem for you, if it is possible to do so.

  • Anatomy of the Mouth: Your mouth anatomy may be causing snoring, if you have a low, thick soft palate. In addition, if you have enlarged tissues in the back of your throat or enlarged tonsils, this may lead to a narrowing of the tonsils. Any obstruction of the airflow will cause snoring. The uvula, or the soft, triangular piece of tissue that hangs from the soft palate, may be too long. This cuts off the ability of air to flow properly. If the snoring is serious, surgical procedures can open up the airway to allow for better breathing ability.
  • Nasal Problems: Several nasal problems can lead to snoring. For example, if you have significant, chronic congestion, this will reduce airflow and therefore cause snoring. A snoring cure here may include treatments for the congestion, such as allergy treatments. Another common nasal problem is a crooked partition between the nostrils. This condition has a reference as a deviated nasal septum. This condition may receive improvement through surgery as well.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat. It also weakens your body's ability to open up the airway if it has an obstruction. These things often lead to snoring. Reducing alcohol consumption can work as a significant snoring cure in these instances. Avoid drinking alcohol in the two to three hours prior to bedtime.
  • Sleep Apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which the airway is blocked with tissues, which stops your ability to breath. Loud snorers and those who have periods of silence (no breathing taking place) should seek medical attention for sleep apnea. In sleep apnea, the tissues in the throat region block off the airway so much that your brain jars you awake just enough to reposition yourself. This may occur hundreds of times per night. A snoring cure for sleep apnea is available, in various forms. A CPAP device can be used to force tissues to remain open. Surgical procedures for sleep apnea are also available.

Getting Snoring Help

Seeing a doctor is sometimes a step in the right direction. Other times, over the counter treatments can work. A number of snoring cures are available.

CPAP Device as a Snoring Cure
  • Lose weight. Those who are overweight are more likely to have excess tissue in the throat and neck region of the body, which can lead to snoring, and sometimes sleep apnea.
  • Sleep on your side. This helps to keep the airway open.
  • Elevate your head. This too will keep your airway open better than sleeping level to the shoulders.
  • Do invest in CPAP devices if your doctor has recommended them. They provide excellent improvement to sleep quality in patients who need them.
  • A number of snoring appliances are also available. Dental appliances help to improve the location of your jaw and help keep the tongue in a forward position while you sleep. Oral devices and lower jaw positions can be excellent snoring cures.
  • Throat sprays are products designed to work as snoring cures. Here, the spray covers the soft tissues in the back of your throat, helping them to open up and allow air to move through them easier.
  • Nasal dilation strips are another tool to consider. You place these strips on top of your nose to hold the nostrils open. These products are available over the counter and said to work very well.

If you are not sure which is the right snoring cure for your individual situation, the best thing to do is to schedule an appointment with your doctor or a sleep specialist. This way, the underlying problem is identifiable and you, and your loved one, can get a better night's sleep.
