Snoring Remedies

From LoveToKnow Sleep

Snoring remedies are available to help you to stop snoring. Understanding why you snore is often the first step in getting relief. If there is a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea, the only relief will come from improving this condition. Those without a health disorder may wish to try a few other snoring remedies to get relief.

Snoring Devices

One way to stop snoring is to use a specific snoring device. There are several options available. Some of them have clinical proof of being effective, while others are not.

  • Throat Sprays: Some snoring sprays are available which claim to stop snoring. These are sprayed into the back of the throat. The sprays are a lubricant, which reduces the sound caused by the rubbing of the tissues in the airway, stopping the snoring.
  • Nasal Strips: Also called nasal dilation, these strips go on the outside of the nostrils. They help to pull open the nostrils to improve airflow. Some are made of plastic. These strips are a good investment for those with a small nasal passage directly causing the snoring.
  • Snoring Breathing Devices: Snoring is a common side effect for those who breathe through their mouth while they sleep. A mouthpiece or other device can help to teach you to breathe through your nose instead.
  • Snoring Mouthpieces: For some individuals, the back of the throat is too narrow to allow the air to pass through easily. Mouthpieces are available to move the lower jaw or tongue forward, to open up this area. The breathing obstruction is minimized improving breathing ability at night.
  • CPAP Device: For those with severe breathing difficulties, a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure) device may be used. The device forces pressurized air into the air passageway through the nose, opening up the air passageway. This stops any disruption of breathing causing the snoring.

Devices may be available over the counter, such as mouthpieces, but other devices such as the CPAP machine and mask are available through a prescription from your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your need for such a device.

Alternative Remedies for Snoring

For many, the struggle to stop snoring goes further than a simple device. There are other ways to get help from your snoring condition. Alternative remedies are often helpful at relieving possible causes of snoring.

One of the most important snoring remedies is weight loss. Those who are overweight are more likely to snore due to the size of their necks. The extra tissue in their airway can lead to additional snoring. It is also a risk factor in developing sleep apnea.

CPAP Masks Help Snoring

Sleeping in the right position is also an easy fix for some individuals. Adjusting your sleep position may reduce snoring because it opens up the airway better. Place the shoulders on the pillow you are using to slightly elevate your head and neck. Sleeping on your back may cause more snoring than sleeping on your side. Try different positions until the snoring has been alleviated.

Other alternative snoring remedies are available, too. Homeopathic remedies may be helpful to some individuals. A number of snoring pills are on the market. They contain a combination of herbs and enzymes designed to reduce mucous. Others have a design to reduce throat and nose tissue swelling.

Other snoring remedies like aromatherapy and hypnosis may work for some individuals. Aromatherapy used at night while sleeping may improve your respiratory system's function. Marjoram oil is a good option for snorers. There is no proof that hypnosis is effective at reducing snoring, but some believe that snoring is a cause of an emotional symptom rather than a physical one.

Improving muscle tone in the throat is another unusual snoring remedy. Singing and other muscle toning exercises can help to tighten the muscles in the throat and therefore improve the airflow there. This snoring remedy has no proof of being effective by science, but some believe it can work.

When considering any of these snoring remedies keep in mind that talking to your doctor about your snoring is important. This is a good way to spot potential sleep disorders and to get the treatment you may need.
