Snoring Solution
From LoveToKnow Sleep
For those that snore, finding a snoring solution that works is essential to getting a good night's sleep. Snoring is mostly a nuisance, but in some situations can be a life threatening condition. It is estimated that at least half the population does snore at least sometimes. For most, it is minor and therefore not a health problem. For others, it is serious. If snoring is keeping you up, you can help the snorer find a solution.
What Causes Snoring?
To find a snoring solution, consider what causes it. As you sleep, the tissues in your throat relax. When this happens, the air flowing through the airways causes these tissues to vibrate. This creates the snoring sound. In some people, there is more tissue and therefore more snoring, or louder snoring. Finding a solution to snoring requires improving the amount of tissue located here.
The Snoring That Is Severe
Varieties of snoring solutions are available for those who need them. First, talk with your doctor if your snoring is severe. If it is keeping your partner up at night, or waking others in another room, this is a sign of serious snoring problems. In situations like these, you could be suffering from a sleep disorder called sleep apnea.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious, life altering illness. Here, there is an excessive amount of tissue located throughout the throat. The more tissue located there, the more likely it is for the airway to be completely blocked off from breathing. People who suffer from sleep apnea have so much excessive tissue in this region that their breathing is cut off for seconds at a time.
The brain notices this inability to breath and alerts the individual virtually instantly. Those suffering from sleep apnea are unable to sleep well because there are constantly awoken throughout the night to open this blocked passage. You may not know you are suffering from sleep apnea or waking at night because the brain just jars you slightly.
For those suffering from sleep apnea, snoring is intense. Getting help for this sleep disorder is essential because over time, sleep apnea can cause heart diseases and complications. The snoring solution here is often to lose weight or to use a CPAP machine for help.
Overcoming Snoring: The Snoring Solution
Overcoming snoring takes a few lifestyle changes. Here are some solutions to consider:
- Lose weight: Losing 10 percent of the excessive weight will greatly improve your overall health. Those that are overweight are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea and other sleep disorders due to their excessive snoring.
- Avoid alcohol: Avoid drinking alcohol at least two hours prior to going to sleep, to avoid the excessive relaxation of the tissues in the throat.
- Change your position:: Those who sleep on their backs are most likely to snore. Sleeping in another position can help.
- Oral appliances: For those suffering excessively, oral appliances can be helpful. These are fitted into the mouth to hold down the tongue and the soft palate. This keeps the throat open, allowing for easy air flow.
- CPAP devices: CPAP machines, or continuous positive airway pressure, push a constant air flow into a mask placed over the nose and mouth. This air flow enters the throat to keep their air passages open. This can reduce snoring and is considered one of the best choices for a snoring solution.
- Surgery: In some patients, surgery, either laser surgery or traditional, can help to remove some of the excess tissue in the throat causing the problem. Surgery is often the last case scenario.
Home Solutions for Snoring
Sometimes the best remedy is one that is easy and simple to do from home. Here are some helpful tips for non-severe snoring:
- Sleep on your side instead of on your back.
- Use over the counter nasal strips that help to open the nasal passageways.
- Use anti-congestion medications when ill, as illnesses like a cold make snoring more common.
- Lose a few pounds. Just dropping a few pounds can have significant results.
- Sing! Singing helps to strengthen and tone the muscles of the throat, helping to reduce the amount of excess tissue there.
- Hire a hypnotherapist to help you, as some claim to provide you with the best snoring solution: hypnosis.

I decided that to control snoring and also preventing sleep apnoea a holistic approach Is needed to tackle the problem of sleep. Initially my wife and I, for about three months stacked pillows about five or six of them in various positions just to get comfortable.
