Trazodone Side Effects Insomnia
From LoveToKnow Sleep
If you take Trazodone for depression or anxiety, you may know that of all the trazodone side effects, insomnia is not commonly mentioned when the medication is dispensed. However, many individuals still report this as one of their major issues with the medication.
Why Trazodone Causes Insomnia
It is unclear why when reviewing Trazodone side effects, insomnia is experienced. The way that Trazodone works is it increases serotonin, which is a brain chemical believed to be a major contributor to depression. It's possible that individuals who have a decreased amount of serotonin and suffer from depression will also suffer from excessive sleep. Once serotonin increases, the brain may take this signal and become overactive making it difficult for someone to fall and stay asleep. Alternatively, Trazodone also treats anxiety. One of the biggest symptoms of anxiety is insomnia, which this medication can treat in some people.
The other possibility for the cause of insomnia from taking Trazodone is that in some people, the medication may not help them. You may think that you feel better with the medication but could be experiencing a placebo effect (thinking it works because you believe it will while it really doesn't). As time goes on, your symptoms increase (irritability, nervousness, etc.) and you find yourself suffering from insomnia not directly related to the medication itself.
What to Do About Trazodone Side Effects: Insomnia
If you suffer from depression or anxiety and insomnia concerns you, it's best you discuss it with your doctor. Individuals who have a history of insomnia may be a higher susceptibility to this side effect.
If you are currently taking Trazodone and suffer from insomnia, contact your prescribing physician or psychiatrist. Sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects on your life and you don't need to deal with insomnia on top of other symptoms you experience from your depression or anxiety disorder.
Not all medications work for everyone. Everyone has his or her own cocktail of effective medication and unfortunately, the only way to know what will work best is through trial and error. Although, it may take you a few different medication changes before finding the perfect treatment for your mind and body, when you do, it will be life changing.
If you really want to continue taking this medication and experience this side effect, you can discuss taking a prescription medication or over the counter sleep aid to fight the insomnia. You can also try herbal remedies for sleeplessness. However, if you decide to take anything with Trazodone, you must let your doctor know because it may give you serious side effects or decrease the effectiveness of the medication.
Discontinuing Trazodone Because of Insomnia
Most individuals do not need to titrate off (take lower doses until discontinuation) this medication. You can safely stop taking it without suffering serious withdrawal symptoms. However, you must be aware that your symptoms of depression and/or anxiety may return quickly, especially if you haven't been sleeping. If possible, wait until you speak to your doctor before discontinuing the medication. This way, you will be able to stop the Trazodone and replace it with another medication to combat symptoms.
Don't ignore insomnia, sleep deprivation is dangerous. Change your medication, get the rest your body and mind so desperately needs so you can enjoy life.
