Virginia Beach Sleep Apnea Help
Virginia Beach has several sources for help if you think you have a sleep apnea issue or if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Sleep physicians are available at local hospitals for initial consultations. They usually are board-certified internists with experience in treating sleep disorders. After an initial consultation, the sleep physician will typically ask the patient to have a sleep study at one of the local sleep centers. The results of the sleep study, combined with the evaluation of the physician and the sleep specialists, will provide the information needed to establish a treatment program.

Jack I. Cherin, DMD
Dr. Cherin is a fellow of several institutions including the Academy of General Dentistry as well as a fellow in the American Academy of Head Neck Pain and TMJ Orthopedics. He is a member of the Dental Sleep Disorders Dental Society and has over ten years of experience fabricating and fitting custom-fitted oral appliances. He is a member of the Sleep Disorders Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He works with the Center's doctors as well as the sleep doctors at the hospital.
Dr. Cherin uses a variety of oral appliances to meet the various needs of his sleep apnea patients. For example, some appliances work best with certain mouth shapes and other work well for patients who grind their teeth while they sleep.
Patients who are not comfortable with CPAP as a treatment option for sleep apnea problems can work with a team comprised of Dr. Cherin, their sleep physician and the sleep center. The team will make sure that a dental appliance is developed and fitted for the patient. The dental appliance is similar to an athletic mouthpiece and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
After the appliance is developed, Dr. Cherin will make sure the appliance is fitted and worn correctly and that the appliance is effective in controlling the sleep apnea. Dr. Cherin will continue to work with the patient and the patient's sleep doctor to make sure that the appliance is effective for the long term.

Don't Put Off Diagnosis for Sleep Apnea
Virginia Beach sleep apnea patients have easy access to several diagnostic centers, sleep centers and many physicians, dentists and sleep specialists. Be sure to make a diagnostic appointment with a sleep specialist if you wake up many times during the night, or if you are told that you sound like you are chocking when you sleep. You may have sleep apnea, a life-threatening condition that can be easily treated with CPAP treatments or oral appliances.
If you have been told that you need a sleep study, don't hold off on getting the study just because you don't know what to expect. Ask for a daytime visit at a sleep center. The sleep specialists will be glad to show you where you will sleep, what you will be asked to do, explain the equipment and show you examples of sleep apnea episodes on their reporting equipment.
